KCIM improved BIM data quality for a semiconductor FAB through model standardization, technical coordination, high-precision libraries and automated quality checks. The consulting connected design teams with construction requirements while validating equipment routes and maintenance space.

Project Overview

Industry: Semiconductors (High-Tech)

Project type: Design of a large-scale new semiconductor FAB

Client team: The design firm’s BIM delivery team

Key challenge: Securing BIM data quality so that design intent is communicated accurately through to construction, taking into account the ultra-precise requirements of semiconductor facilities.

Background and Challenges

Semiconductor FABs are densely packed with equipment, and their processes require ultra-precise environments. Physical space for equipment installation and maintenance must be secured from the design stage. Since even a single construction error can lead to substantial financial losses, the required level of design accuracy is exceptionally high.

This project comprised large-scale facilities with numerous models operating simultaneously, making it particularly challenging to maintain consistency between models. The central challenge of the consulting engagement was to reliably manage the integrity of extensive BIM data without compromising design efficiency.

Our Approach

KCIM’s High-Tech Group served as a technical bridge between the design firm and the construction site, establishing a dedicated technical support system to help maintain BIM data quality and improve design efficiency. Going beyond supplying tools, we focused on the following four areas as a partner responsible for data quality throughout the project.

1. Standardization to Support Data Integrity

To establish a stable foundation for managing extensive data, we configured central files and worksets optimized for the project. We also carefully managed each object’s required parameters and properties in accordance with the guidelines, preventing potential errors before the data extraction stage.

2. Technical Coordination to Improve Constructability

We systematically grouped clashes among complex equipment and structures to support coordination meetings, minimizing the risk of design changes and securing construction quality in advance. We also rigorously managed the shared coordinate system for the large-scale complex to prevent positional errors from accumulating across multiple models.

3. Delivery and Validation of High-Precision Libraries

We developed and supplied dedicated libraries optimized for the design methods used for the complex components unique to semiconductor FABs. In particular, simulations using dummy objects verified at the design stage that sufficient space was available for equipment delivery routes and maintenance, improving the practical completeness of the design.

4. Automated Quality Control (Automation QC)

We implemented automated checking tools developed in collaboration with KCIM’s Construction Technology Information Research Institute (Archilogic), establishing a system for continuous review of modeling deliverables. Automating repetitive checks reduced the workload on project teams, while detecting subtle data errors that are difficult to identify visually, enabling consistently high BIM quality.
