Kumho E&C: Building a BIM-Based Common Data Environment (CDE)

Kumho E&C worked with KCIM to establish an Autodesk Docs common data environment for BIM-based construction management. The project centralized documents and enabled web and mobile collaboration around shared BIM data.

1. About the Client

Founded in 1967, Kumho E&C is a leading Korean construction company that has made a significant contribution to the country's construction industry for more than 50 years. It has played a major role in building national infrastructure and actively expanded into overseas markets, sharing an advanced corporate culture while contributing to communities in Korea and abroad.

In particular, Kumho E&C continues to apply BIM, a core smart construction technology, across a range of projects as it works to develop more advanced construction capabilities.

2. Project Background and Challenges

As BIM has become central to on-site operations, the need for diverse stakeholders to collaborate in the same environment has grown more important than ever. Owners, designers, construction teams, and subcontractors need a consistent, shared working environment to communicate using the same data.

However, information gaps and fragmented data frequently arise on BIM-based construction sites. Even within the same project, stakeholders often held different versions and formats of information, affecting the speed and quality of decision-making. Against this backdrop, Kumho E&C began evaluating suitable solutions for introducing a construction management framework based on a Common Data Environment (CDE).

3. Project Objectives

The objective was clear: establish a working environment suited to BIM-based construction site management and put it into practice in day-to-day site operations.

Specifically, the project focused on enabling convenient access to 2D and 3D BIM data on the web and mobile devices, while providing an environment for immediate comments and communication about issues arising on site. Ultimately, the aim was to improve both productivity and quality through efficient construction management.

4. Solutions and Implementation

With technical support and close collaboration from KCIM, an Autodesk Gold Partner, Kumho E&C established a CDE using Autodesk Docs and a Docs-based BIM document management process.

An intuitive document management structure enabled centralized management of all project-related data. Issues and Markups were used to ensure that stakeholders communicated using the same data. Greater use of web and mobile access also allowed teams to view BIM data and exchange feedback immediately, both in the office and on site.

5. Business Outcomes

Kumho E&C is now carrying out projects in a CDE built on Autodesk Docs and has identified the following practical results.

Keeping the latest document versions in a single environment has reduced construction errors and noticeably accelerated BIM data review and decision-making. Direct communication on the BIM model has improved both the accuracy of information sharing and the efficiency of collaboration.

Building on these results, Kumho E&C and KCIM are reviewing the capabilities of additional solutions, including Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC) Build, as they consider further expanding the use of the CDE.

6. Conclusion

Establishing a CDE on a construction site involving many different stakeholders is never a simple task. On BIM-based sites in particular, where information gaps are common, creating a single data environment is an important achievement in itself.

With support from KCIM, the Autodesk Docs-based CDE provided a foundation for consistently managing and using all data generated throughout a project. It was simpler and faster to implement than expected, and its intuitive operation made it widely applicable across existing workflows. Kumho E&C plans to further increase the value of the CDE through additional applications.
